Vo Tech Schools

A vocational-technical school, often called a vo-tech school, is a high school in the United States and Canada designed to bring vocational and technical training to its students. Proponents claim that students bound for college may be able to use such skills to realize a distinct educational advantage over other students in their major.

Within the context of American and Canadian post-secondary education, vo-tech schools differ from a traditional four-year university since vo-tech curriculums aim their focus on careers that do not require a four-year undergraduate university degree. Rather than provide specialized academic training for university-bound students in a major pursuing white collar careers in a professional discipline in a manner offered by a traditional university, vo-tech schools instead offer apprenticeships for the skilled trades as well as citations, certificate, and diplomas for skilled technicians and workers in support roles in various professional fields related to academia, engineering, high technology, accountancy, business administration, financial services, hospitality, nursing, medicine, architecture, and criminology.

Additionally, vocational-technical schools often provide training to adults from the surrounding communities. The training, offered for a cost, may range from a single course to an entire program of ten or more courses.

Though less common, some vocational-technical schools are full-time. Not only do they provide vocational and technical training, but they also provide traditional academics that students would typically receive during high school, all within one school district or building. Such schools often expose students to their academic classes during one half of the day, and to their vocational and technical classes during the other half, or have academic weeks and vocational-technical weeks.

Most vocational-technical schools, however, are part-time. This means that they only provide vocational and technical training, while the academic portion of their education is obtained from their home school district. Students engaged in such schools often spend one half of the school year at their home school for academic classes and the other half of the school year at the vocational-technical school for training, alternatively they may go to their home school in the morning and their vocational-technical school after lunch.

The third key to success is maintaining a degree of autonomy from local school districts. Budget autonomy allows schools to allocate funding as they see fit to meet the needs of their particular students.

Meanwhile, the overall dropout rate at regional voc-techs is 0.5 percent, even lower than the overall 1.5 percent statewide dropout rate, according to 2020-21 Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education data, and special needs students fare particularly well at voc-tech schools. Voc-techs enroll more special needs students than traditional Bay State high schools, and those students show impressive academic growth from ninth grade on.

Other states would do well to learn from the Massachusetts vocational-technical school model. Importing what the Bay State does right could allow leaders to slash student college debt and reduce the shortage of skilled workers in key economic sectors.

I'm glad this question was raised, because it is an important one. When many people hear about career and technical education (or vocational education), they often envision a dirty facility in the back of the school. CTE programs have made enormous strides to ensure relevancy and earn their place as a component of every student's education, regardless of their background.

About 6 out of 10 students in CTE programs report that they intend to continue in that career field, and the others are still gaining technical and employability training and readying themselves for their future.
