i enjoyed this book because it provides a good overview of the field of business communication, with lots of examples. it includes easy to read chapters and lots of examples. if it had more practical examples and more discussion of different theories, i think it would be very helpful to my students. this is a good book for basic business communication students and professors.

the breadth of the book might be a good plus for the business minded student. as the list of suggested web sites in the endnotes indicates, there is a wealth of information available on this topic. however, the book does not have a good discussion of the major current trends and issues of the business communication context that are likely to be the focus of students. for example, the recent financial crisis, the role of social media, changes in technology, and the impact of outsourcing, the supply of capital etc. are not discussed in any great detail.
the author has included a chapter entitled essentials of business communication at a glance at the end of the book. this is supposed to serve as a quick reference on the topic, and it is divided into the key topics discussed in the text, and includes a list of websites for further information. however, the chapter is rather incomplete and lacks references for the information presented. it is also somewhat inconsistent in that it does not use the same format to present the information. a format table would be helpful, to facilitate comparison of the information presented in each chapter.
overall, this is a good resource for an introductory business communication course. it has comprehensive coverage of the key topics of the course and it is well written and organized. it would be a good book for students to refer to periodically, or it could be used as a supplement to a more specialized resource.
