Plot summary
The movie begins with Simran Singh (Kajol), a young woman who lives in London with her strict and conservative parents, Baldev (Amrish Puri) and Lajwanti (Farida Jalal). Simran dreams of meeting her ideal man, but her father has already arranged her marriage with his friend's son, Kuljeet (Parmeet Sethi), who lives in Punjab, India. Simran's father agrees to let her go on a month-long trip across Europe with her friends before she gets married.
On the trip, Simran meets Raj Malhotra (Shah Rukh Khan), a carefree and wealthy young man who lives in London with his liberal father, Dharamvir (Anupam Kher). Raj is also on a vacation with his friends after graduating from college. Raj and Simran initially dislike each other, but gradually fall in love after spending time together. They decide to elope, but Simran feels guilty about betraying her father's trust. She tells Raj that she cannot go against her family's wishes, and leaves him at the train station.
Raj is heartbroken, but his father encourages him to follow his heart and go after Simran. He travels to India and finds out that Simran's family is preparing for her wedding in a few days. He befriends Kuljeet's family and pretends to be his friend, while secretly trying to win over Simran's family and convince her to run away with him.
Raj faces many difficulties and dangers in his quest, as he has to deal with Simran's stubborn father, Kuljeet's violent brother, and the customs and traditions of rural India. He also has to prove his love and respect for Simran, who is torn between her duty and her desire. Raj manages to impress Simran's mother, sister, and grandfather, but fails to win Baldev's approval. Baldev eventually finds out Raj's true identity and plans to kill him.
On the day of the wedding, Raj tries to elope with Simran, but she refuses to leave her father behind. Raj respects her decision and prepares to leave, but Simran's grandfather stops him and tells him that he has convinced Baldev to let Simran go with him. Raj and Simran run towards the train, where Raj's father is waiting for them. Baldev chases them and catches Simran by her hand, but he realizes that he cannot force her to stay. He lets go of her hand and blesses her, allowing her to join Raj on the train. The movie ends with Raj and Simran embracing each other as the train departs.
